ski in italyItaly is one of Europe's greatest holiday countries. Huge parts of Italy´s economy are dependent on tourism. But Italy doesn't only provide beaches on the Mediterranean or old romantic cities like Florence or Rome. The very north part of Italy is dominated by mountains rising up to over 4800 m. Italy and France are the southernmost countries of the European Alps.

Skiing in Italy normally means huge amounts of snow and mostly fine and sunny weather. Italy features the most sunny days of all countries which take part of the Alps (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy). The most famous ski resorts in Italyare Alta Badia, Sestriere or Gröden. Most of the the bigger resorts can be found in South Tyrol, the German speaking part of Italy.

Ski resorts in South Tyrol are very similar to the resorts in Austria (as are the people living in South Tyrol). After lifts have closed spirits are high in Corvara, St. Ulrich or Wolkenstein, the larger villages around Alta Badia and Gröden ski resort. The so-called Dolomites of South Tyrol are unique in the world as they feature the steepest peaks on earth. Unfortunately there is only one major connection between Austria and South Tyrol. The Brenner Autobahn (Brenner Highway) is often overstrained on weekends by skiers and snowboarders from Germany.

Hence it is worth leaving early to be the first on the roads. After you have arrived in one of South Tyrols rustic and cozy hotels you feel at home immediately. The hospitality of South Tyroleans is famous not only in Europe!
